The Peel region is made up of the five local government areas of Boddington, Mandurah, Murray, Serpentine/Jarrahdale and Waroona. The region has a high incidence of family & domestic violence (FDV) and a lack of community awareness of how to help or where to get help.
When the policing district of Peel changed to be a part of South Metropolitan Perth in 2012, the incident numbers for Peel were compared with all metropolitan districts. Peel incidents of FDV accounted for a massive 19.76% of all metropolitan Perth FDV reported incidents. Most recent policing data reports 2,699 domestic violence incidents in the Peel district (July 2014-May 2015). In 2011, the Peel region represented 4.8% of the total WA population, yet accounted for 12.5% of all reported domestic violence incidents in WA.
WSNTV conducted a survey with 76 service providers in the Peel region about the demand for services and their capacity to meet this demand (see the questions we asked): 73 responses were received from 50 service providers. They told us that the consistent high incidence of FDV in the Peel region has led to higher pressure on FDV crisis support services, many of which are only able to accommodate high-risk clients, leaving those women and children of lower risk but still traumatised without support for a period of time (see a summary of the survey findings).
The high levels of FDV also impact related services such as financial and legal services, which are reporting high numbers of clients escaping situations of domestic violence.
This is why We Say NO to Violence is an important community initiative. We collected information in 2016 from government and from women who have survived domestic violence. See our report, our summary and recommendations and the stories we collected.
The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare has also released an updated 2022 article on family, domestic and sexual violence in Australia – access this report here.
