Building a community Alliance to end family and domestic violence in the Region

WE SAY NO TO VIOLENCE

Building A Regional Alliance

We Say No to Violence [WSNTV] is a community project to raise awareness, improve understanding, and take action to prevent family and domestic violence in the Peel region. The Peel Community Development Group [PCDG] worked with founding members Pat Thomas House (now OVIS Community Services), Allambee Counselling, Peel Community Legal Services and Choyces to build an Alliance of community organisations and individuals.

In 2016, the PCDG won Building Safe Communities for Women funding from the Department of Social Services to undertake the project. Allambee now leads WSNTV with OVIS Community Services, Peel Community Legal Services, and Choyces.

We know that family and domestic violence grows out of gender inequality, beliefs and behaviours that disrespect women, and rigid or stereotypical gender roles and identities. These situations can lead to one person feeling that they have the right to control their partner’s actions.

Eliminating family and domestic violence is our goal for the Peel region: it needs us all involved.

We Say No to Violence specifically aims to;

  • Increase community understanding of family and domestic violence in the Peel region.
  • Increase awareness of the support services available for women and children experiencing family and/or domestic violence.
  • Create a movement of people – the ‘Alliance’ – in the Peel community who will pledge to undertake action around family and domestic violence.
  • Support and celebrate the actions of the Alliance
