Building Healthy Relationships in Peel (BHRP Project)

The Building Healthy Relationships in Peel (BHRP) Project focuses on the prevention of Family and domestic violence. It does this by working to change attitudes of young people towards violence and gender equality.

Family and Domestic Violence continues to be a major social issue in the Peel region with areas of high FDV reports and assaults associated particularly with areas of social disadvantage.

There are four attitudes which encourage violence against women. These are the attitudes which BHRP wants to changes:

  1. Disrespect towards women
  2. Condoning of violence against women
  3. Rigid gender stereotypes
  4. That men should take control in relationships

All these attitudes are linked to gender equality. If gender equality is accepted then these attitudes will be less common in our society.

Who is BHRP For?

 BHRP is focused on

  • Children and Adolescents who are setting or consolidating their attitudes towards gender equality.
  • Teachers and school leaders who are
    • undertaking respectful relationships education in their schools,
    • educating themselves about the connection between gender equality and FDV and effects of FDV on children
    • setting their school culture
